A Golden Nano-Checkerboard

We demonstrate the direct observation of long-range ferrimagnetic order emerging in a two-dimensional supramolecular Kondo lattice. The lattice consists of paramagnetic hexadeca-fluorinated iron phthalocyanine and manganese phthalocyanine co-assembled into a chessboard pattern on single-crystalline Au(111) substrates.
These findings suggest the use of molecular frameworks to engineer low-dimensional magnetically ordered materials.

This collaborative work was carried out with the "Bern-team" of Dr. Shi-Xia Liu / Prof. Silvio Decurtins.
